Getting pounded with some "much needed" rain.  Recently we got 2.5" over a three day period which is the first measurable amount we have had in several weeks if not months.  It looks like we could probably get that much again today   ;D.  What leaves have already turned will more than likely come down.

Not real sure if I posted this site earlier but it is a pretty good site for weather.  You can set it locally.  The map seems to be very good which can be zoomed in to give specific counties.  I have watched the time and locations of rain patterns and it holds fairly true.  Just thought I would give you the site and let you give it a try.

Drought and hot last week.
Floods and cool this week.

This old song sums it up nicely: ???

I came from Alabama
With my banjo on my knee,
I'm goin' to Louisiana
My true love for to see;
It rained all night the day I left,
The weather it was dry;
The sun so hot I froze to death;
Susanna, don't you cry.

We had a downpour, lightening & thunder yest late afternoon.  Our neighbor dog was over hiding out & Spike was whining.  Glenn was working a few miles away & said he only got some sprinkles.

This AM it is 53 degrees - overcast - looks like we might be in for another thunderstorm.

I was just talking to my sister in manitoba. Last weekend they winterized their cabin on Lake Winnipeg. She said it didn't seem right winterizing while wearing flip-flops. Weather there was still in the upper sixties 968F / 20C).

Here it's definitely fall. That can be felt in the mornings which are cool. Cold at the cabin; last weekend it dropped to 36. Frank's place must be having freezes.

Our most wonderful increatable Indian Summer seems to have broken.  Looking at rain today and temps starting to plunge.  Yesterday working home from LaGrande, Oregon to the Nampa or Boise, Idaho area I could see just see under the clouds on the Elk Horn Mtns. there was snow on them there hills......I really need to get up to the ranch and get the fifth wheel out of there.     :(  Sad this spring, summer and fall is about in the books........  It was a fun full year....

I bought a new snow shovel for the cabin the other day. I had looked around but never saw any, so I asked at my local True Value hardware. That had them, About 30 or so.  People in the desert don't usually buy them until right after the snow storm.  ::)

How long is your winter on average MountainDon?
Title: Re: Hows the weather?
Post by: MountainDon on October 26, 2010, 05:48:37 PM
How long is winter? In the mountains around the cabin... from about now to March -April. In an average year we can still drive up to the cabin to mid December, with one eye on the weather at all times. By March there will be above freezing daytime temperatures.

Here on the desert mesa today it was below freezing for 2 hours in AM. Been in the 60's most of the day, 59 F right now. We don't really have a winter here on the mesa as far as I am concerned.  :)   More like a long Fall to me.

We took a day of and drove up to the ranch.  It had been raining and we worked in the orchard until dark putting guards around the bases of the young fruit trees.  Went to bed and woke up to four inches of snow.  Put a very full day redoing little bit if fence and rolling up soak-er hose we use in the berries.  Pulled the irrigation pump and drained the irrigation tank and unhooked it from the spring.  Decided that the fifth wheel can stay up there another couple weeks so we just winterized the plumbing.

Weather lately is real unpredictable.  This past week in the morning it was 26, 46., 38 (snow flurries) then 47 and today it is 27.  Doesn't seem like mother nature can make up her mind whether she wants to go into winter or not.

I'll have even more when I get the rest of my wood stove parts. Should be later this week- just in time!

Does anyone know why the temperature drops a couple of degrees right as the sun is rising? I never noticed this when living in the mid west so maybe it's just a desert thing, but I have noticed that it nearly always cools a few degrees at almost the exact time as sunrise here.   ???

It only happens when the night sky is clear, not overcast and also we have to discount any cold fronts or mass air changes that may occur. . The temperature drops pretty much all night; no sun rays to cause the temperature to rise, so it drops. The first rays of the sun are weak, not strong enough to overcome the cooling that has been going on. Therefore the temp continues to drop until the sun is strong enough to overcome and reverse the cooling.  Not just the desert, but because we have mostly clear skies we notice it more.

I guess the reason I notice it here is because we generally always have clear skies.  8)

I know the earth is a giant thermal mass and holds onto it's coolness (stubbornly at times, I may add) for quite awhile after the sun is up. The temperature drop from the time I go to bed, until I wake up is typically around 10 degrees or less, about 1 degree an hour. I was curious why the drop seemed so pronounced at sunrise but thinking about your explanation may have answered my question. The same thermal mass is holding on to the heat well into the night, so the cooling accelerates as the night wears on and probably peaks somewhere around sun up.

That's my guess anyway. I'd be interested in seeing data that records the temps. hour by hour.

If there are no fronts or precipitation nearby, the daily temperature cycle is primarily controlled by the radiation budget. This is a comparison between the incoming radiation from the sun (sunlight) and the terrestrial radiation given off by the earth's surface (felt as heat.) Think of the sunlight shining down on earth as the same as putting pennies into a jar. As long as you keep putting pennies in, the money adds up. In the same way, as long as the sun is shining down on earth, the amount of radiation adds up. Let's say that at some point you decide to stop depositing pennies into the jar and begin to take them out. Even though you're withdrawing pennies, you still may have a lot of money in the jar. Likewise, when the sun goes down, the incoming radiation from the sun stops, but there is still a lot of radiation that has been absorbed by the earth, so we still feel heat near the earth even after the sun goes down. At night, the "withdrawals" of terrestrial radiation continue, and the ground and the air near it cool. Earth's surface is typically in radiation "debt" from a couple of hours before sunset to near sunrise. When the sun comes up and the "deposits" of incoming radiation from the sun equalize with the "withdrawals" of radiation from earth, we get the coolest temperature of the day. Sometimes in winter when the sun is low in the sky, Earth's surface can remain in radiation debt longer, and the coldest temperature of the day can actually occur as much as an hour after sunrise. As the sun gets higher in the sky, earth's surface is in radiation surplus (the deposits exceed withdrawals), so the ground and the air near it warm.

Yes I stole it from a weather site   :)

I'll take sub zero temperatures and 3 feet of snow over unrelenting wind any time. Wind chimes meant to be calming sound alarming and frantic. My dog won't stray more than a foot from my heels. I gave up working inside the house because the gusts hitting the gable wall (50 mph ?, not sure) are too disconcerting, lots of creaks and groans. Makes me glad I built it solidly, but leaves me wishing I had built it even more solid. There is no such thing as overbuilt during times like these.

But at least when our winds die down, they're gone. Not so with snow and sub-zero. I lived in that for too many years; I'll never be nostalgic about the weather back home, nor the shoveling, the frozen tires and shocks, seats that turn to rocks, the need for block heaters, balky diesels....

You are right about that Don, it's been awhile since I've had to endure a very cold winter. Time erases memories, especially the bad ones. Your post reminded me of when I used to disconnect my car battery every night and bring it inside, otherwise it would never turn over in the morning. I didn't have money for any fancy block heater, probably spent it on beer. [crz]

If it was windy all the time though I would still take the cold over the wind, I have trouble even thinking straight when it's real windy. Then of course there's cold and windy...

Lots of dirt blowing through the air here, now. Don't like that part of the wind much.

Cold up at the cabin. Twenty eight when we arrived on Friday AM. That was in the cabin. Outside was 33. Sunny though and it got up to almost 40 every day for a few hours. Then back to below freezing for something like 18 to 22 of every 24 hours. Nice and warm in the cabin after the first couple though.

All weekend up in the mountains I could not believe it is almost mid December. There's no snow! Or more correctly what little fell three weeks or so back has virtually all melted away. Little bits here and there where the sun doesn't hit but that's all. It has barely dipped below freezing for a few hours every night then back up into the mid fifties! If it wasn't for the low sun angles I'd swear it was still late October.

Fire danger is back up too. The forest service has the "High" signs hung out again. That's the real bad part.

The dozer plowed up to the jobsite today, I ran up a couple of loads from the building supply. Winds to 50 mph, blowing snow all day, punching through drifts on the back roads, subzero windchill, high of 17. Supposed to get downright ugly tomorrow. We have dodged the bullet as far as snowfall here at the house. Minimun with 1-2" occassionally.  Not so lucky in the northern end of the county with snowfall above 2 feet.  The temp this morning was 6F with the wind the chill factor is -22F.

The part of Idaho here I live is 34 this morning and where I work into - LaGrande Oregon - eastern Oregon it is 46 so we are normal to above normal temps.  It is very cloudy right now and lots of moisture.  Snow level I see is going to go up to 8000 or so.  The ground is starting to get pretty saturated.  A couple weeks ago we were single digits to minus and snowing like crazy.  Winds are really starting to pickup.

I saw a little bit of blue sky this morning but seems like it is insisting on clouding up - grey skies again & supposed to rain through Wed night...

We were driving along Hwy 1 (the coastal hwy) several years ago - had stayed at Pismo for a long weekend get-away.  Anyway, it poured down rain the whole time - toured Hearst's Castle in pouring down rain  >:(  We drove to Ragged Cove or some name like that along Hwy 1 - got to a nice restaurant there (nothing else around) - it was finally sunny but it was our last day & we were headed home  :(  Anyway, there was a big waterfall...

It was beautiful, great meal, but had to turn around as Hwy 1 was blocked off right after the restaurant due to mudslides.

We had rain, hail & snow today - the next couple days are supposed to be sunny but getting into the 20's at night - we probably won't get that cold up here, though on our ridge.

Had 3.5 inches rain over the past couple days...

It just went from cloudy, cool and relatively calm to blustery, snow blowing through the air sideways, and very wintery looking in the space of a few seconds. Snow sticking to the ground already!

Not much snow here but lots of wind and it is cold (for here that means around freezing or a little below)..  Over night it may hit 11 F.

The mountains may get another 10" by tomorrow afternoon.  :)

I'm hoping the first day of the new year will turn out to be the coldest. Thermometer sitting at 0 degrees right now and everything is frozen solid- no running water. Pretty sure I will be dealing with some broken pipes when it finally thaws.  :(

That skiff that hit you John didn't get here last night, I drove over the forest and hit it at the job this morning. Kinda ugly day but not too cold, pushed snow and poured some block cores then tarped and left heat on it. The snow followed me home, we've got a couple of inches now. Looks like a pretty gloomy week coming up, but this week wasn't too bad for January.

Additional 5" of snow last night.  Temperature is 18F.  Feel fortuneate though as there are southern states who have gotten more accumulation than us. ???.  Weather pattern this winter has been odd.  No complaints but it looks as if someone put up "Detour" signs to Mother Nature on the Mountain State in comparison to the years previous.

The day started off with 1-1/2" of sleet and then turned to snow.  Accumulation thus far is 4" of snow plus 1-1/2" of sleet.  Temp bounces from below freezing to just a few degrees above.  But the snow fleas have decided to emerge again.  Last year they appeared on December 24th.

It's colder in Albuquerque today than Fairbanks, Alaska!  I believe we're setting a new record low (-4) for the day; maybe a tie. Reports differ.

Our street never melted off today, it usually does within a day of snow. Just a coating of ice and packed snow, but slippery. I answered my question whether or not anti skid brakes work in reverse. They do.

We hit a new record for the day and month at -9 as well. The unofficial station a few blocks away hit -13.

Also the third day in a row for a school "snow" day. Not much actual snow but our local roads are totally iced with only the feeder roads and main routes having blacktop showing in the driving lanes. I know it's not as spectacular looking as Chicago's Lakeshore Dr but for high desert NM it is quite the event.

Whats wrong with this picture.  So glad to be spared the wrath of Mother Nature for a change.  Yesterday was 50F and low of 18 last night.  This is the first winter in a long time that I can remember it being so mild (knock on wood) during the winter.  I sympathize with those usually getting what we do.

I almost hate to report this but the Boise Valley is sort of its usual well behaved self.  Very mild and mellow.  The snow is going further up the mountains every day.  The elk and deer are starting to follow it back.  42 today, 48 by Sunday.  Sort of just a regular year here.  It was 35 today up where the ranch is at, winter is not over up there quite yet.

Brrrr - I lived up by Lynden/Bellingham area for 12 yrs.  It was beautiful, we lived right off of Wiser Lake & could see Mt Baker, but too many overcast days & drizzly rain.  The wind & ice storms got pretty cold & snow would drift pretty deep sometimes, although it never lasted that long.  Black ice constantly but we could use studded tires back then which were wonderful - in a Volkswagen I could drive in anything, even the old manual steering pickup did pretty well.

So, back to the cabin here in the Sierra foothills - we are expecting snow & rain starting this afternoon & through Saturday night - must be getting your storm...  what w/the chemtrails - even when the day starts out sunny blue skies, the planes will be making their grids across the sky until it is totally gray & covered w/clouds  >:(  Can't hardly count on a sunny day anymore!

Temperature was 35F yesterday evening. Overnight it climbed to 50F at 7AM.  Then dropped to the current 36F.  The sun has been shinning all day as well as snow flurries & rain.  Go figure.  But there is an upside in that the robins have migrated back by the hundreds.  Won't be long now.  They wouldn't have made that early flight unless they knew the weather was on the upswing to SPRING. ;D

I hope everything is ok, Red  :o  Seems like one thing gets done & you have to fix several other things.

We're having a lot of flooding around here, too.  No flooding in the house, though. The wind is blowing pretty hard up here - been raining for days - had a little break on Tuesday.  Supposed to snow today (& last night but it didn't).  The creeks & rivers are really high.  Don't know if Yosemite is still closed.  Back in 1997 I think it flooded so bad that it was closed for a couple months - the roads & camps were washed out.   Right now there are rock & mudslides, power poles & trees down.

60F today and believe it or not it didn't snow this morning like it had the past 3 mornings.  Friday and Saturday it was 38-42F blowing snow.  Good working weather.  I tackled the water gap that was crushed by the National Forrest tree that fell on the 24th.  Finished it up yesterday and today I replaced 100 feet of fence that was taken out this winter by a car accident.  Seeing that the annual Spring Cattle sales are this Friday I thought I would fix the holes.

At the cabin; Saturday was wonderful, clear skies, sunny, temperature up to 65 F.

Early Sunday (today) it began to snow around 5 or 6 AM as the weather guy said it would. By noon 5 inches had fallen with no signs of stopping. The weather guy said the snow could continue until 6 AM Monday with up to a foot accumulation.

We came home this afternoon (still snowing) only because our work ethic dictates we need to be here in town for work Tuesday. My sense of adventure said to stay at the cabin. Lots of food and water there and all kinds of yet unburned firewood. Oh well.

We had 1.5 inches rain Sat & Sun, 40's-50's, today it got to 65, supposed to be 80-82 tomorrow & for the next 3-4 days.  Amazing weather.

Wow, Minnesota has been hot!

Hot and dry!   I have never seen so little grass in the mountains here. I can't imagine what the eastern plains of NM look like, but I hear the ranchers are reducing their cattle by up to 30% or so because they can't feed more than that.  Locally, in the mtns, there are much fewer head being run in the forest and those keep trying to break throug our fenses to eat our grass.

I think the weather has finally made a turn around toward Fall/Winter the last couple of days.  This morning the temperature was 46F.  Daytime temps are holding in the mid 70's.  Great working weather.  Boy I have a lot to get done to try to beat winters arrival.

Boise Valley is pretty normal for this time of the year.  Nineties during the day cooling to the sixties at night.  No moisture in sight 10% chance at the most.
Up where the mountain property is eighties and fifties.  Maybe 20% chance of moisture.

This is good because right now when it does put down moisture it comes complete with lighting.  We did have a lighting stom the other night.  One of our ranch friends lost 11 sections of winter grazing which equals 7040 acres.  So now they have to buy high priced hay, and build a lot of fence back.  They are very smart operatiors it was insured but that is a lot of work putting in that much fence.

Still holding in the 89's here but getting better.

The big concern now is Hurricane Irene. It is looking like it's going to strengthen to cat 4 and come inland through NC. The farm is on the NC line and right in it's path and the burb house was hit by Isabel when it came ashore.

Isabel took much the same path and was not as strong. I've been through major floods, blizzards and smaller hurricanes but have never been as nervous as I waited out that night with Isabel hammering the mature trees around the house.

The next day, it looked like an atomic bomb had gone off all the way to the coast,

We now have had 2 1/2 inches total rain in our part of the Jemez. Doesn't sound like much, and it isn't, but the fire danger has been downgraded to Moderate now. Much better than the summer full of Extreme.

Thanks Don! The biggest problem I have now is getting things ready. I need to sharpen the chains on the saws and just haven't gotten the energy up. This couldn't have picked a worse weekend because my glucose has just gone crazy this week. I haven't eaten anything other than enough water to float a battleship, for 3 days....and five minutes ago it's still 439. I have a lot of motivation right now and that's about all that's keeping me moving.

Well, some of us "countryplanners" might be in more danger than others.

Me; since the east coast earthquake the local news media is somewhat abuzz about the "past dueness" of a Rio Grande Valley earthquake. While it might be an exciting life experience, I'd rather take a rain check on that. Anyhow it all gives me new food for thought on the fact that our mountains are in a seismic C zone. Not the worst, but not a "what me worry?" zone either.

It was an eye opener in a lot of ways Don. First, we had it and Jane said "What's going on" after a few seconds I figured it out and said "Earthquake I guess".

After a few minutes the news went crazy ...EARTHQUAKE....5.9.....on and on as if the state was in shambles. The truth is, it was a non event. New Yorkers started doing what they do best. Whining! They still are, now about the Hurricane which may really cause some problems, but also something we live with every year.

I also firmed up some ideas about buildings (John may have a stroke). Pole foundations (IMO) rule. The farm house and every other pole building I looked at, just went with the shaking and didn't even crack a wall seam.... but most of the damage I've seen was a direct result of masonry foundations cracking and crumbling.

I looked at one yesterday where the chimney had broken off and fallen through the roof. When I looked for a cause, the foundation had a crack with a 4 inch gap in it. It wasn't the chimney that moved, it was the house.

Last, I am getting my annual education about people. Country people and even burbanites who are more independent, just handle problems as they come. Everyone else looks to the government to do something.

Please
Try the Pacific North Wet......
In the Well-I'm-wet Valley we get 11.9 months of fall, or what we have come to call Falsuminter.

Friends visiting for a week from out of town (during the two days of summer);

"It's so green here! How lovely....is that moss?"
"No, it's my lawn"

"What a lovely patina on your deck furniture"
Oh, forgot to wipe off the mold.....do you have a change of clothes?"

Two days later
"S-o-o-o-o how long does it take to water your lawn?"
"I'm not, summer's over."

"Well then explain those freckles."
"Rust spots"

"So that explains the lines at the tanning booths..."
"Sorta, we just go there to remember what bright looks like"

"Hey pard, what's that in my MaiTai, an olive?"
"OOOH, Hal, That's not your drink, it's our pet slug's living quarters, and, as I was about to show you, that's my tie....watch him climb it.......Heyyyy, where'd his slime water go?"
Honey, do we have any more of that triple sec lemon slime mix?
....and a bar towel for Hal's little mess he made.....and some alka seltzer....

"When can we leave?"
"GreyArk arrives at noon, daily"

Pacific North Wet forecast:

Tues: Rain, stare out window

Wed: Showers, mad dash out to get mail, forget to unlock door, stare in window

Thurs: Rain (huh, imagine that) don wet suit, get mail, wave at neighbor with webbed hand, neighbor shows you his one finger webbed flipper trick

Fri: Drizzle all day, sunburst right after work, wash car, reserve tee time

Sat: Gully washer then drizzle to showers (Mothernature: HA HA HA HA HA)
Settle for slug fest with neighbor (racing trained pet slugs)

Sun: Pray for rain to go away, frogs/locust appear

Mon: There's a sun rise, and you can see it (Mothernature: HA HA HA HA HA)
Sunny all day......at work (stare out window)

Extended forecast:
Rinse, repeat

Here in Southwestern Idaho and Eastern Oregon high deserts the annual summer drought is braking we received rain.  Hard for us to natives to understand so I can imagine what others think when they move here and experience rain, snow, sleet in great abundance then suddenly one day it all goes away.  Then you never see it again for months not hardly a shower let alone a cloud.  Then it appears sort of God sent one fall day.  A few wispy clouds then by noon the next day the sun disappears and we have moisture.  This has been one very dry summer for being so wet in the spring.  Temps were mild here I think we never really went triple digits in Aug when we reach out and touch hot.  Now temps are falling and the cows and horses are starting to put on their winter hair.  Snow levels I read are to be down to 7000'.  Time to collect fire wood now that the fire danger is starting to come down.

The leaves on the maples & another tree (don't know name) are turning red, the cottonwoods are yellow - very pretty.

"Rain gear" rain, several inches during last 3 days, more coming.  One small wind storm 30-60 mph gusts, another one coming Thanksgiving day. Several inches more rain during the next several days. The solar motion detector triggered battery backed up lights around the place are not getting enough light to keep the batteries charged, so carrying a lantern around has become helpful. Temps vary between high 30's low 40's at night and low 40's to high 40's during daylight.

We can not seem to attract a decent storm up this way in Idaho.  It is cold and windy.  At 5000 ft where the ranch is there is a little snow in the shadows.  Lows in the low teens and highs in the low thirties.  This has caused a warning that certain areas can expect wind chills to be well below zero.

"considerations, that's why I moved out of Puget Sound...  too much rain!"

LOL Sassy!

Rain is a big part of the reason I love it here.  I don't think I'd like to live any further west, like in the Rainforest Proper, but these woods are lush and rich from all the water, infinite shades of green, earthy smells, and a cozy cabin with a big window on it all and a warm fire.  Fresh clam chowder, sourdough bread, and a bottle of wine....

OK, tromping through mud to fill bird feeders, water running down my face as I'm trying to drive nails, excessive "tarpage" tending to keep that dry  firewood dry, salmon on the highway as the creeks flood (really hate that), winds making 100'+ firs and cedars wave like wheat fields in a breeze, dead short in the electric fence (only when its raining), cats trying to dissect small creatures on my kitchen floor because "its too wet to do it outside".

Funny thing, all of the above can happen in a single day.

I guess I've been in the NW so long that I've become a real "weenie" in the heat.  Take it over 75F and I'm making popsicles and calling "union breaks" every 1/2 hour in the shade.

Hmmm. Yes I think I'm glad we never bothered with trying to drive to our cabin this weekend.  The highway is snowpacked and icy today. It has snowed up there but I can't tell how much as the precipitation collector does not have a heater to melt the snow. The forecast for today and tomorrow at out location is....

This Afternoon: A 20 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 25. West wind around 10 mph.

Tonight: Snow likely. Cloudy, with a low around 10. West wind around 5 mph becoming east. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.

Monday: Snow. The snow could be heavy at times. High near 13. Wind chill values as low as -5. East wind between 5 and 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 6 to 10 inches possible.

Anyone else do a search include State and Snotel.  You should bring up a link with a state map and where they are located.

No Rick, the Snotel sites are a little further north of us. We do have a remote weather station just off the highway about 4 miles away from our property though. It's good for wind, temps, sun, fuelwood moisture, rain and so on. It doesn't "do" snow depths though. It will record the moisture though but there is a delay as the catchment is not heated. So when it's freezing the snow collects and then may melt several days or more later.   Better than nothing though.

webcams too can be used

I have one at the resort 1/2 a mile from my cabin site- and then another at 10,000ft above and 2 miles to the west

I love sitting here in Colombia and being able to check out the weather at my property 1000's of miles away

Strange as it might seem our SnoTel site does not do snow.  Does total moisture.  This is done via a bladder that displaces liquid that is measured and weighed, calculated from what I understand.

http://www.wcc.nrcs.usda.gov/snotel/Idaho/idaho.html

If you open that link.  Find Boise the first two red dots east of Boise one is Prairie where the ranch is located.  The other dot is Trinity a large mountain above Prairie.  High alpine lakes, trees and big snows.  (Well not right now.)

Of you go south of Boise that there are three dots grouped together.  Mud Flat, South Mountain, and Reynolds Creek.  Member Mike on Bike has his project going close to Mud Flat.  (Do not let the name fool you.)  That is the Owyhee Mountain country down there.  That is an area of fascinating geology, wildlife, history and huge ranches.

UK4X4 we are a little shy on web cams and fancy accouterments up this way.  I might buy one and install it up there when we move up there, or put it over at the store.  A network of them in house and out building would certainly keep the thieves away if they did not steal all the equipment.   :-[

[cool]  Rick.    In northern NM there is some service that does do snow depths. I'm pretty sure there is one near NM_Shooter up near Chama. At the Chama RR bridge IIRC. Must be another service.

"A network of them in house and out building would certainly keep the thieves away if they did not steal all the equipment."

I'm only 5 mins from the ski resort and an hour from civilisation so theft is a worry where I am too

I have presently 2 hunting cams 14ft up in the aspens with python locks -hitch lock-wheel locks and all 6 wheels locked too each other as well.

really only have to worry in the summer when the grounds hard enough to drive it out though.

Down the line I think I'll try a permenant webcam-

High 20's (F) at night - Mid 30's during the day.  Clear.  Means the hoses stay frozen as well as any frost on the ground, and ice crystals ooze up out of the mud in clumps of little columns, like transparent mushrooms.

A little more of winter this morning. 2" of new snow, temperature 20F (40F last night), wind 20-30 MPH with gust of 50MPH. This will be the trend for the next couple days as we are caught by the artic blast from the west.  But it could be worse like in Alaska with 15-18 FEET of snow. ;D

The Cascades are filling with snow (and that's r-e-a-l good), but here in the Well-I'm-wet valley, we've been getting slosh, or rain mixed with snow, or what I call snain.
In normal parts of the country, snow comes down all fluffy, and even drivers of trucks will gaze upon the freshly laid blanket with awe and wonder.
Snain, when it sticks, is immediate slosh.
So, for the third morning in a row, I've woke up to snain, but still have a bit of awe, as in 'awe, sh^t'.....
S'mornin' I zipped past a semi on I-205 (curvy, dippy, non-supered, engineering marvel of a stretch of hwy), and just as I was along side the big fella we ran into a nice patch of standing water. 'Course, nine of his eighteen wheels did that 'Hey, I'm in a car wash' thing to my Wrangler, as I crabbed thru the mini lake, doing my best to keep rubber side down, and waiting patiently for restored visibility....while screaming to the beat of Led Zeppelin.
Yeah, gonna say it was about a 8.9 on the pucker scale, as when I came back to my office from making coffee, I noticed bits of foam from the torn Jeep seat in my chair....and it ain't even 6 am yet.
Gonna be a fun day, yes indeedy, a fun day.
Title: Re: Hows the weather?

You need to turn around and do the mini lakes up in the Columbia River Gorge,  Best I have found is Lake Bridal Veil followed by the always exciting Scream of Death Lake comboed with the zephyr winds just before The Dalles.  Now that is fun well exciting and I have done it on vacation!  And to think people pay good money to go to Disneyland.

Please do the snow dance for Idaho.  Last night showed we were going to get 8.5 inches.  This morning none on the ground and the prediction has been dropped to 2.5 inches.  However the mountains look as if they will get a couple feet.

Expected to drop 2-6F by late tonight.  But somehow we have dodged the snow accumulation with only an inch or so. 80 day time and 72 night.  NICAs wearing jackets.  On the mtn it is 4-5 degrees cooler and steady 15 mph wind.

Bad news is that we have had 2 inches of rain thus far  in February when the long term says 0.5 for the whole month.  Bad for the build and the plywood subfloor.  Coffee pickers too.

We have been experiencing a lot of thunder storms in the last 3 weeks.  I can remember having maybe a week occassionally off and on through the summer but not repeatedly day after day for this length of time.  Here is a farm about 60 miles from the house that lightning stuck a tree which had 24 cattle huddled underneath.

We've found a number of dead cattle under trees when moving about the Jemez, the Santa Fe NF. Strangely we've never come across any elk or deer like that. Do they know something or maybe that's just the way our luck runs. ....  sometimes it's the smell that leads us to them.

The hills and mountains here are drying out at an alarming rate.  Weather reports here have become quite boring.  But our summers here get that way.  Temps are in the high 90's - triple digits as of late.  I went out to do some yard work the other day and felt too hot went back inside news said it was 107.

Highs mid 60's, lows mid 50's.  A surprising amount of cloudiness during the day and coastal fogs in the AM.  Great working weather, but my tomatoes could use more sun.  We had a lot of rain in June, more than normal even for here. No drought in this corner of the country.  I'm feeling pretty lucky, even if I do need a green house for warm weather vegetables.

Considerations you are more than welcome to send you tomatoes to the Boise area.  We are still in the boring high nineties - triple digits daily now.  More like summer I remember as a kid.  No clouds until the thunder booms show up in the afternoons and evenings.  Mostly likely will continue until mid - September.

GRRRR!!!  We are above normal here and really looks a lot like when I was a young'n growing up here.  It does cool off well at night however.  The mountains because the way that the snow chinooked off this year.  The soil did not have a lot of moisture stored.  Grass is in short supply for the livestock and August  into September things will be a tinder box here.

That said I am sure glad you are not catching it there.  However I have seen some very hot weather over your way.  But it makes the Walla Walla Sweet Onions and the Hermiston mellons grow and grow.   [hungry]

If you are in short supply of rain just try making hay it will give you all you want.   >:(

Quickest way to make it rain is to cut your hay!  ;)  However that will not even work this year or so it seems.

Thanks for the offer - however we have friends in Tulsa and Edmond, Ok and they will take it.  Here in the valley we have irrigation and the reservoirs are in very good shape and will carry over a lot of water.  We should be okay even next year.  But if we go a year after that it will be grim.

It's been downright nice here so far :)  80's and 90's (which is COOL for us this time of year).....

Cabin evening temps around 45 and daytime temps in the 80's....honestly, I'm loving it!

That came from the Ski Resort in my area.  Not real sure how they came across it or how accurate it is.

We'll see -- so far we've been below normal in temps but what's the norm?  After all, normal to me is the last ten years whereas to those who produced this it could be 100 years for all I know.

As for snowfall, it's been increasing YoY around the cabin.

So far this summer has been VERY mild (and we like it that way ;) )

Your lucky OJ.  We went through the summer from hell here in the valley and up above both.  The 143,000 acre Trinity Ridge Fire is just over the mountain from us and staying there thank God.  http://www.inciweb.org/incident/3088/   Last winter was way below norm snow fall and when it did it was very wet and all Chinooked off with in a couple weeks.  Made for no ground water at all.

Rain today here at home. Maybe a dusting of snow to come

The mountains around the cabin are forecast for 3 to 4 inches on Saturday (60% chance). 50% chance Sat night. Clearing Sunday and becoming sunny.

Tire chains, all 4, are in the Tacoma waiting for take off in the AM.

Well the complete week the temperatures have been at or near 20F every morning.  Daytime ight have gotten up to 50F if the sun was shinning.  Don tell Karen the flowers in the front boxes are no more.  Just couldn't withstand the radical drop in temperature.

This morning though it was 36F at the cabin (outside).  A comfortable 70F inside with the aid of a couple gas heaters on low during the night.  I doubt that I will even need heat this evening up there as there are about 15 or so musicians and the same amount of friends on the agenda for some music.  Probably be enough hot air to do the job. ;)

41F here but rain.  Seems like we are having higher temps than normal.  In fact all the ice is melted off the road to the cabin.  Like driving on a sponge after it has been frozen.  But I would imagine that once the eastwardly winds kick in that we will be much like you.

Well we went from a Frog Choker all day yesterday, temps in the mid 50'sF and near flood stage conditions to snow flurries and 28F today. Predicted 1-3" of accumulations before tomarrow.   Yep w/o power again at the house since 11:00 P.M..  This seems to be getting a routine.  Power company needs to cut back the right of way to rid it of some tree limbs which is usually 75-80% of the outages.  Thank goodness for the generator.

Plowed the drive again to get rid of the 3-4" of new snow.  That is twice in three days.  You learn to get rid of what you can when you can.  It has a way of catching up with you if you don't.  Calling for another 4-8" tonight and tomarrow.  But in the lower elevations we are only catching the lower prediction numbers with the higher elevations near us are getting the max plus some.  Been lucky it has been light snows and I can use the 4 wheeler rather than break out the big guns(tractor).  It is a lot easier to manuver.  But it usually comes a time when I have to push back what I have played with and have to use the tractor.  Start off with a 12' driveway and halfway through the season I end up with 8' or so if I don't.  But the temperatures are pleasing 20-30"s so it not too bad.

For the past 2 weeks it has been sunny and nice in the mtns around the cabin. About 9 days ago it hit 66 F and was above 50 for 9 hours straight! We went up Sat morning. When we got there it was 22. 38 in the cabin. usually it is colder in the cabin than outside. And it was windy!  For a half hour in the afternoon it was blowing 45 to 55 mostly with a gust of 68 mph recored! Glad we were inside. Small tree branches were flying through the air and rattling on the roof and thumping on the walls. Has a high 0f 29, overnight low of 15. More of the same sunday but no winds over 44. This morning still cold but winds only hitting in the teens. Then we came home.

A little stormy!  We went to the cabin last Sat and had decent weather until Tuesday. At 3 AM tuesday we had lightning, thunder, rain and wind. I don't recall lightning that early in the year before. At 7 AM there was an inch of white stuff on the ground. At 8 AM the forecast called for up to 4 inches of snow and we already had  1 1/2.  By 11:30 we were up to 5 inches and then the noon forecast changed to up to 9 inches. Since were were already running ahead of the old forecast numbers we decided to finish lunch and leave. So we did. Even though we had enough food and didn't have to be anywhere until this coming Monday night we opted for the less exciting option of driving out and down the three miles of  never plowed dirt back roads.

The forecast is up to 10 inches yesterday this time.  I have no idea what did really fall as we can't measure snow amounts.

Wow! It rained today, and yesterday and every day since the 29th June!!  Great improvement over the past several months. However we have yet to reach an inch in total where our cabin sits. We're only at 7/10ths so we still have drought conditions and the entire Santa Fe NF is still locked down tight as a drum. The FS now has a video camera recording action at the southern gate on road 10, but not at the north end which we use. Too bad, we'd wave. :)

Well I guess winter is finally here.  16F this morning but with the 30-40 MPH wind the chill factor is well below 0F.  Not much accumulation at the house but up on Williams River it was a different story as my son and I treked back home around midnight after a musical jam session at the camp.  Snow, wind and elevation proved driving a real treat with visibility down to about 5' .  Nice to arrive home to the Hearthstone roaring ( Wonderful wife kept it stoked).  Forecast say this is the trend for the next few days.  Should be a treat tomarrow as the first day of buck season.  Better wrap the little one up so she can attempt to bag the bucks that have been tempting her for the last couple weeks.

We had just enough snow here at home overnight to show who in the neighborhood has the best insulated ceilings by the amount of melted snow on the roofs.  :)   I wonder if anyone else noticed but myself and Karen. Yep our roof did very well;  :)   we had snow right through the day while most the others were clear over the heated areas. All except the vacant and  unheated home down the street, a winterized foreclosure.

Not too cold. Above freezing most of the morning but dropping all afternoon. I hear from a mountain neighbor we had 4 or so inches at 8000 feet. Temperatures there in low to mid twenties.

Even here in SC, it is cold (for us). I had really wanted to get the ceiling drywall and attic insulation done before winter, but that isn't gonna happen now. I've been trying to get a drywall quote for a couple months now- most of them don't even respond. We're hunkered down in the basement, riding out the winter, and getting a little work done when the weather cooperates.

Doesn't do much for the water table.  This morning it was 9F with the wind the chill was -15.  About 1" of snow with more to the west of us.  Seems like the mountains sort of shield us from the Noreastern storms. We get the cold from the North West but the percip from the Gulf and coast don't seem to meet each other  Suppose to warm a little then back down close to 0F Monday and Tuesday.

We had more snow on the ground 7 - 8 weeks ago than we do now.  :(

FR to our place is still open.

I talked to some friends that have cabins and house up at Silver City, Idaho today they say they are still driving in and out.  If normal it would be snowed in and snowmobiling in.  Town closes down then except for a caretaker.  But they are still open....

Oh BTW just checked and Brawley is a awful 70 degrees today.  If it were me I would stop in at El Centro for some out of this world Mexican Food we found there last year.   [cool]  Cant even remember where it was at only we were on a Costco run from Yuma.....  Temp that day while Idaho shivered and shook 70 degrees.   ;)

Speaking of Bicycling.  Who was it that was building a straw bale house that used to bicycle all the time?  Enjoyed his build but haven't heard from him in ages.  I think he was starting an orchard as well.  I believe it was in CA that he was doing this.  Does "Drew" ring a bell to anyone?

Never mind.  I found it.  I even amaze myself sometimes with memory.  His last post was 2011.

Funny when we start to think of anything above 10F as warm. :-[

I guess most of the country needs to maybe have some firewood around this weekend.
Well - some live in them warm spots where they don't know what cold is now.  ;D
Stay warm all --- it shall pass

Yep believe it went to a shallow grave somewhere.  Would like to know how it was finished and how his effort in the orchard went with his drip pipes and the like.

OK, OK....Guilty as charged......It WAS 78 degrees down in the desert, maybe an hour drive from the Cuyamacas.  My son's mountain bike team is half kids from the mountains and half from the desert.  Too hot in the summer, the desert kids come up; this time of year it's too cold to ride in our neighborhood so we headed down to the desert, just like the Kumeyaay used to.
Sure, it was warm.  But man did I pay for it---15 miles through sandy washes trying to keep up with real riders.  I can handle the fatigue but I was being really careful not to get hurt---my son Patrick took a pretty good spill but immediately rode the drop off again to get it right.

This is what the start of the ride looked like, heading for those mud hills.  This is all an ancient lake bed that used to be fed by the Colorado river, maybe as recently as 500 years ago.  There are shells all over the place, both bivalve and bombing range types.

This is where the Blue Angels do their training, and it's an active bombing range just to the south.  The mountain in the distance is La Cienega, also called Signal Hill, south of the border in Mexico.

You can get land out here in Imperial Valley pretty cheap.  Summers are miserable, but quite a few snowbirds spend the worst winter months out here.  A guy I talked to that purchased a condo in Borrego Springs for 50K claims his payments for the year on it are less than his heating bill if he wintered over in Minnesota.

Hey if you were out there with a bunch of athletic kids you sir are excused in my book.  [cool]

We were down that way last year.  Ellen absolutely hated it.  Says she will never go back.  Warm temps can not lure that mountain gal back down there.  She said she might if we did southern Ca. because of the flora but never back to the desert.  She also says east Texas and Louisiana she would return to - but not the deserts of Az.

Yeah...AnnaMarie's the same way.  I thought it would be cool to have beach, mountain, and desert properties all in the same county but she has zero interest in the desert (though she loves the occasional hotel stay in Palm Springs for some reason)   so I guess desert properties are out.
There are these interesting condos in Borrego Springs.  Rohr Corporation was dabbling in prefab steel structures in the '50s.  The walls and roof are two layers of sheet steel with room for insulation.  They'll probably last forever in the desert dryness.
(http://thumbs.trulia-cdn.com/pictures/thumbs_4/ps.57/7/a/f/f/picture-uh=84a5d2cc46974a02fbe9f5d19c62e7f-ps=7affa26db35ac3d95581e979d88662f-3139-E-Club-Cir-6-Borrego-Springs-CA-92004.jpg)

You can pick one up for around 50K.  Right now there are two of them going to tax default auction with the county, 25K for opening bid.  There are pools, tennis courts, very nice landscaping, and they border a golf course-----but here's the buzzkill.  Association fees of $434 a month, and who knows how much those will go up over time

I get the feeling (or lack of  :-[ ) that when it hits -20 or below it matters little. lol
Neighbor claims an unofficial -44 Sunday and since the best I saw was only -41 I believe the stinker fibbed ;D
Balmy -31 early morning - but the wind chills had to have been -60.
Had bucket of water I was hauling to horses but filled up bird feeders enroute so maybe 20 minute delay.
That bucket was frozen on top and sides like cement. If I had not seen it I would not believe it could freeze up that fast. I pity all the critters out there in the woods and trees. This has to take it's toll on them

Chances of snow here is about nil. Thurs/Fri maybe a 10-20% chance in the mtns that are our most immediate concern.

Bright skies and cold for here; 20 F for a low here at home & 18 F at the cabin. High of 36 both places today. Could be worse. Our record low for the day is -15 F (1971)

Make you a deal Rick.  I will give back the snow if you take the cold air with it.  Temperature started at 5:30 A.M. @ 34F and has dropped to 0F some 14 hours later.  Predicted low now revised to -5 to -15 with a wind chill of -45F.

I think I will keep this fired up tonight.  Well I have since mid October so why change. ;D

Actually it looks like this storm is a little more than they first predicted.  Actually several fronts are heading our way.  We may not need your snow after all especially with the cold attached.  We might do so after we get some insulation on the ground however.  Now if I can just get OlJarhead to steer it this way rather than he taking it all for himself..... :D

Well I think we bottomed out.  -8F at daybreak.  But some of the surrounding areas are recording -13 to -20F so it's really hard to tell who's reading is right.  I know mine is set against the flue so it may be affected somewhat from the actual temperature.  Power outages at nearby communities so I would imagine if the power is not restored that internet will be affected as out signal comes from that direction and is probably working off of batteries.  Time to throw another log on the fire.   c*

Well it's not quite over but unofficially we got somewhere between 8-10" where you look.  It was a little wetter than I thought so I had to end up breaking out the "big guns" and use the tractor.  Still snowing but according to the predictions it is suppose to taper off later this evening.  d* Yes Don I watched the weather forecast for Wytheville and it looked like you were right on the edge of this one.  Actually I would rather have the snow than the cold artic which they say will dip to -6 for the next couple days.

Rick & Mt.Don I wish I could import some your way but I am afraid you will have to fend for yourself.

Yup, happily we missed the worst, maybe 2-3" stuck, we'll have to wait to go sledding. It was a little too icy to venture back out over the hills after dark but should clean up when the sun shines again. It's windy and dropping out there now. If it calms by morning we'll burn some piles.

We've been cleaning up and sawdusting the slope between the coop and the barn, hoping to put more blueberries in there. We had a meeting last night with a student that is moving into the county while working on her phd in non timber forest products. Up in the woods we might start planting medicinals, ramps and other wild crops. I walked into Lowes last year on my return trip after delivering a few hundred pounds of ramps... I can still make the ladies turn their heads  ;D

we are having a 'good old fashioned' winter here in WI

there is book  and on PBS about growing up on a WI farm in the 40's  (Jerry Apps "A Farm Story")--- 'winter started in mid November and the snow didn't start melting until April'

'it was the season that defined the rest of the year'

sounds about right --- lots of below zero, too

- 10 yesterday but it did warm up to zero and I got the JD 855 diesel started and plowed the driveway including the nice frozen berm left by the snow plow at the entrance -- not complaining we would not make it up the hill without the plow truck and the sand

Prairie continues its sort of boring weather forecast.  Low forties during the day with drop dead gorgeous blue skies - nights high teens and beautiful unobstructed night skies.  Mean while the Boise Valley is in its winter inversion.  Fog - then dense fog - then a little hope clearing then back to dense fog and little hope of ever seeing the sun until the high that has the western US in this drought  breaks down.....

I am glad the forecaster were wrong a little.  Didn't quite make it to -6 but it was 1F at 6AM.  It has warmed up to 14F here at noon.  Good time for a walk to the mailbox.  Along the way I took a few photographs.

When I returned I threw a couple more sticks of wood on the fire.  Got a whiff of Cherry smoke  when I opened the stove door.  Smelled like an old timer that I used to know that smoked cherry tobacco in his pipe as he made gunstocks in his shop.  Think I will have me a cup   c*  and savor the moment.

We were +4 this morning and pretty windy so I didn't lite any piles. Wandered down to the barn which is really more my indoor shop and threw wood into the stove. Probably could have left the door open and just thrown wood at it. I'm usually down to a shirt in an hour or so but not today. It was 16 just a minute ago when I came up to let the cordless batteries charge and warm my toes. Hopefully the wood will be warm enough not to just freeze glue on contact in a little bit. This time of year it's easy to bring the glue up and down the hill but the wood itself is frozen so gluejoints become more difficult. I left everything I'll glue this afternoon up higher on benches during lunch to help it warm up. The ladies have managed to squirt out 5 cackleberries so far today... I'm rather impressed they ventured outside.

Minus 9F this morning at daybreak.  Approximately 5,000 customers w/o power in the county.  I know that doesn't sound like a lot of population by others standards but with a population of 8,900 that is over half the county.  I am on another grid and still have power.  This is turning out to be a memorable winter as it pertains to the temperature.  Being a rural county I would say that the majority of the people have a wood alternative or wood primary heat cource. If there is an upside unlike summer outages not much food spoilages will occur.   d*

Makes me glad to be down south, we were a balmy -4 at daybreak  :)
We just hit plus 4 and the phone line came back on. I called Frog and Dawg the techs to cancel the repair ticket. We're at the end of the longest line in the county and in the last 2 cold snaps the line must be trying to pull itself apart. It's kind of fun to pick up the phone and hear them chatting from the ends of the line "I dunno Frog, it seems to be good here" "Well Dawg, I guess we ought to go shinny up the next set of poles, talk to you in a few"

A little different scene this morning.  With the above temperature the last couple of days and then warm rain last night and this morning.  Temp 37F.  There is a lot of snow pack that is melting from the higher elevations.  This was the same scenaro which attributed to the 100 yr flood levels that we had in Jan/1996 in which there was 6' of water in town.  The stream at the house only originates about 3 miles south of the house and is fed by surrounding mountains.

Here is a picture of the stream along my driveway just above my bridge at a normal level.

WOW John - We can't get a storm out here in the western USA.  We should have a couple feet up here at least not a couple inches.  The cross country skiers, snowshoers and snowmobilers are having to travel a long distance to get to enough snow to have any fun.  You can put on your 'muck boots' and walk anywhere up here.

Cool, looks like a couple of old motte and bailey mounds, north and south of town? There's enough William's and Robert's as first names in that branch of my old family tree I can't keep them all straight.

Wow, looks like you've got an impending mess again John. We finished melting out yesterday, had a healthy rain overnight and into the morning and the bottom has fallen out of the driveway. Although the frost is still in enough that the ground isn't absorbing much, looks like y'all are far worse in that regard.

Monday night we had 2 inches of snow here at home. Under it was a layer of ice all over everything; enough to delay the schools by 2 hours. It melted mostly.

This afternoon it is cloudy and snowing again. Temperature has been falling since 11 AM; now 28 F. Only an inch forecast here, or maybe up to 4 or 5 inches, depending on which forecast I read. I must admit the weather can vary a lot in the space of a few miles here on the west side of the Rio Grande. . The mtns are another story. By the end of tomorrow we could have up to 8 - 12 inches since Monday. We'll have to wait and see.

John...   Why is it so many winter pictures look so beautiful, but we don't like dealing with the effects?

I guess that is what they mean when they say " have to take the good with the bad".  It's been quite a roller coaster this past month.  -19 to 50F. back and forth .  Today we have 1/2" of freezing rain, warmed up some, cooled down again and is snowing now.  But truthfully I don't mind the snow.  Sort of makes everyting look clean.  I counted up in the last 3 weeks (13 days of school) the children have only attended 4 days. 2 of those were 2 hr delays.

Well the sub tropical air mass attacked and won over the high that was plaguing us. It ran in to the cold that is plaguing JarHead we got about 14 inches of snow and then it got so warm it started raining sort of....Now it is threatening to rain the snow off.  The ground is so frozen there will be very little chance of the ground absorbing it.  With the rain and snow we have added 2" of moisture at  the SNOTEL site in the past couple days.....

We're set up for a major winter storm here in the Carolinas today. Our immediate area in north Greenville County, SC, could see a foot. I know- laughable to you guys up north, but it could shut down this area for a week, depending upon how fast it melts. Further south, it looks like a major ice storm- lots of folks will be out of power. My wife works at a hospital, and brought clothes and gear for an extended stay. I'm home, keeping the critters company.

School snow day?

Yep you guessed it.  I guess the girl will be celebrating 4th July in a classroom.   ;D

The 4-Wheeler just didn't cut the mustard.  I was only able to go 40 feet on just one pass.  At that rate it would have been the weekend before I got the drive done if even then.  I broke out the "big guns".

Notice the snow rolling over the blade on the first pass.  That is a standard truck blade working about 12" of snow.

Unlike the snow of two days ago the 4-wheeler makes quick work of clearing the driveway.

Mud. Virtually all the snow has melted, save that on north facing slopes and scattered patches where the wind drifted it. Our north facing drive up the hill has maybe 6 inches that has melted and refroze to make it mostly ice. We used the alternate. The ground freezes overnight and by noon is muddy.

Yes the cabin road is the same way but not for a month or so.  Gets just like a sponge.  The worse thing here is the melt off and add rain to that scenerio it does a lot of destruction downstream.  After the last this is what I am faced with.  It washes everything into the water gaps and fence.  This is a good size snag and there are limbs into the fence as well as leaves on the right of the gates.  I haven't even checked on the watergap to the south of the property yet but imagine it is the same way.  Yearly ritual cleaning out and repairing before cattle buying time.  But I am not going to get into much of a hurry as it will most likely happen again in the next month or so and I would have to do it again.  I just put it off until the threat of subsequent flooding is over.  As you can see by the condition of the gates this is not the first time they got crashed.

Let's see, about 15" of snow a week ago, a skiff on Tuesday then warmed up to about 60 each of the past 3 days. A gullywasher of rain last night into this morning... and I pulled off the first tick of the year a minute ago  :P. We're keeping the BIL's dog for a bit and she's into everything, including one of the chickens yesterday. The tick was a little seed tick, I guess she found the first hatch. I hate the noise of guineas and they'll end up as hawk food but I think I'll get a few if this is any indication of how the year is shaping up!

WOW we are getting hammered by rain.  The frost is leaving in the ground and the water seems to be actually being absorbed rather than being so frozen it just runs off.    [cool] We picked up a little under an inch today.  The high mountains are accumulating some much needed snow.  We had a high of 43 degrees here at the homestead 40 over at the Snotel sight.  It is reported that we are like 97% of normal.........

After yesterday's little storm front we ended up with nearly 8" of new snow.  The temperature this morning a little before daybreak was 0F.  The ground here although a tad soft on the surface during the day is actually frozen just below the surface.  The road to the cabin is starting to get soft or at least was until yesterday. d*

I'll take it  :) We just got about 1/4" of clear ice coating everything out of this one. It was treacherous this morning so I bailed on the mining operations and spent the day making a fertilizer calc for the farmers market and finding a new starter for the tractor... I scooped a handfull of the old one out of the bellhousing... hope the flywheel survived, I really don't want to split the tractor.

'Bout -10F up here in Montreal today.  Been much colder than past years, not necessarily in temperature but in stretches of cold spells.  Normally we'd get a -40 for a day or two then warm back up and it snows.  Since Christmas is has been constantly in the minus double digits without much of a break.

Didn't that groundhog bite the mayor?  It must be that, not global warming.  Anytime spring is right around the corner, its normal for everyone to get antsy about winter being done with.

Well last weekend we ended up with 16" on top of the 7 " we had already and then another 2" on Thursday.  So in essence we ended up with some 24-25" of snow.  Running out of places to push it to.  The driveway keeps getting narrower and narrower.  With the temperatures not getting above 20F since it is not melting anytime soon.  This morning it was 1F.  So ready for Spring which is suppose to be here shortly. :)

Come now global warming.....that's old hat

The new cool word is climate change....

Which means some places get warmer, some become deserts and some become tropical......oh and others will just stay snowy all year !

I'm no greeny but the 20th century must be playing havoc with nature and atmosphere in so many ways that we may not have even noticed yet. ...and some that have ...montsanto

I want my food ugly with warts and natural bug holes. which come from a farm who still uses natural fertilizer and crop rotation with livestock........not genetically engineered to provide them more profits and look pretty on the shelves

I enjoy sci-fi and worryingly I see a lot of books and films based on what will probably be our children's future.

Our generation has made the big advances in history..........the planet has suffered alongside our health and obesity through packet and convenience foods that we were simply not designed to eat.

And meanwhile back to the weather

It's been getting warm here lately, flirting with 90 a couple days this week- about 12 degrees above normal. We're still managing without resorting to the A/C. I open the windows at night, and close them up during the day to keep in the 'coolth'. The warmest the interior has gotten so far was 75. There's a lot to be said for living in a giant cooler! We had a cool front come through yesterday, so today will be dry and more normal- about 80.

Strangest thing---there is WATER.  Falling from the sky.  Has anyone ever seen this before?  I thought something was leaking.  Water doesn't come from the sky, it comes from farmers selling their shares instead of growing stuff.  I wonder if the Clean Water Act folks have been notified.  The stuff is running down the storm drains as we speak.

Who stole our summer?   ???  Woke up this morning looking at 36F.  Frost on the roof. Yesterday the high was 61F.  It's not even October yet.  Well good brisk morning to split firewood.   ;)

We're enjoying the first cool weather in a long time. This summer in SC was hot and dry. We're about a foot behind on rainfall- leaves are just drying up and falling off. Yesterday was 48 degrees- about a 20 degree drop in two days.

You picked the right time of the year to plant grass.  Fall is first over spring IMO.  Summer forget it.  Rick spacing it out means you will have to mow it a day apart.  d* ;).

This weather I would take year round.  I guess I am more of a fall/winter person.

72 is nice but it can be a degree either side and still be fine. I actually fired up the woodstove nite before last and just camped out in front of it for awhile, that was a pretty quick change. Humidity crashed too.

Umm, John.. about that splitting firewood... [slap] ;D

I split wood this past weekend up at the cabin. For next winter. :)    It was just cool enough to have the first fire of the season. Small one.  Cleaned the chimney last weekend.

I too like it this time of year. I wouldn't mind fall all year.

This weekend was absolutely beautiful, with today even being pretty warm.  Unfortunately the little one was not well and we spent most of the day waiting at the clinic.

I wonder what the weather was like everywhere else, the forum was completely dead this weekend.  I kept wondering if it had gone down.

Nope appears to be up and running.  Maybe others are experiencing your good weather and making the best of it.  Not as much here as we have had rain for the past three days and forecast the majority of next week the same.  Mostly inside works it appears for us on the east coast.

Hope it wasn't anything serious on your little one and a quick recovery.

December 24th, Christmas Eve and its 62 degrees outside (I'm in Montreal so we usually have 3' of snow by this time).

I can't say that I mind a green Christmas!

Hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas, or whatever holiday you celebrate this time of year.

Now you know why we like where we live in the SW; desert mesa at approx 5500 feet. A little rain yesterday. Snow flurries that melted upon ground contact. But if we want snow we can head east to the Sandia Mountains or north to the Jemez.

Where our cabin is our friends up there estimate something like 14+ inches have fallen recently. They are diligently using the snow blower. Makes room for them to turnaround in and for us to park when we go up to snow shoe to our cabin. Sure is nice to have friends like them.

Sounds like most of us are getting some moisture recharge. We've had about 5" of rain this week, I can hear the spring over 500' away, yup, the windows are open. We got to 70*F yesterday... there's still greens growing in the garden and the family could come up here for Christmas, usually we are happy to bug out for a few days by now.

22 F last night. 33 F right now.  Forecast says we'll be lucky to get over 35 F.  Snow coming, maybe a few inches. Back to 22 F tonight.

@ cabin last night it dropped to 10 F according to the remote thermometer. Now 20 F. 2 - 7 inches of snow forecast

We are in our first storm of the year now, calling for up to 16 inches of snow.  Pretty much a white out right now, 14'F with a "feels like" of 0.
I guess we are paying for the warm/green Christmas Eve.

"Moisture recharge..." we had non stop rain for a couple of weeks right up to Christmas.  I hadn't seen that much rain in many years, had it been cold enough we would have likely had a few feet of snow by now.

Same here, we awoke to 51F and a heavy fog. The driveway melted enough for the Honda to complete its 180 and head down. Luckily it made it to the house the one day I really wanted it up there. We had orders for about 80 lbs of taters Friday, I hadn't looked forward to hauling them down. We turned to rain today a little after noon. I had just pushed the truck outside to drop the tank. I was underneath thinking "this isn't too bad" when the chickens decided, hey it looks pretty nice under there and we can really help make that creeper slide good  ::)

We want cold, wet weather. I'm in Sourthern California, a hour outside L.A.  Had 83+ degree weather this week and forecast for warmer a couple of days next week and dry.  Where is the El Nino everyone promised?  So far no rain in Feb, which is the month we are suppose to get the most rain; 3-4 inches usually.  I so-o-o want some cold wet weather that keeps us indoors for a few days.  It gives you a chance to reset.  All this sun makes you feel guilty for not being outdoors doing something.

One of the guys is trying to figure out how to pedal power it leaving the front wheel and frame of a bike and using the pedals to turn an axle that spins the center gear on each side. The crawler mechanism will replace the rear tire and it'll steer with the front wheel. Something to get the kids started and then let them run with that one or...
It's reminded me of experimenting with a new piece of furniture coming online in a factory. We started with conduit linkages but I remade them in beech today. I think I made a dozen gears before the light bulb lit. With the gear they are low speed and I think we could do a session making charcoal, then a pattern set of gears, mold them, melt aluminum and cast them. All kinds of ways to get into trouble  ;D

I got the drive between shops and out to the public road plowed but it has turned to sleet, I don't think we're done with this one yet,

When is this winter going to end already?  It goes from heavy snow, to crazy build up of ice storms, to warm weather where everything melts... within hours.  Yesterday evening was rain, a TON of rain, all the sewers backed up, hydroplaning like crazy cause of small ponds all over the road surface... (people still honked at me for slowing down though - morons) then overnight switch to freezing rain.  Schools all closed today, power outages everywhere... I think I will finally lose our tree in the backyard, it's leaning pretty heavily with all the ice buildup...

What did that damn gopher say?

Insanity...

We had a province wide blizzard warning on Wednesday, well the warning was in effect since the Monday or so.
They said 12" of snow with 80 kph winds,  suggesting people should stay home.  I set my alarm for an hour and a half later than usual, figured I would wake up, have a coffee, slowly start shoveling... get to work eventually.  I woke up, looked outside, nothing.  The claimed we had 2-3 inches... but my truck was clear and free of snow (maybe too much wind).  Got to work in 15 minutes, roads were baron, nobody in the office... everyone took the day off for the same reason.

It was about -4 F yesterday, calling for 53 F next week.  But who knows at this point....

Can't wait for the snow to melt.  I need to get to the land and see where the snow melt runoff flows.  I stopped building my road last summer because I hit an area that had different vegetation and almost looked like a path... afraid there might be seasonal water flow in that area.... need to get there after the snow melts to see the ground but before the ground thaws and water is already gone.  With this funky weather, it will be very hard to know when to go.

Yes there is nothing more troublesome than investing the time and energy into building something that may eventually be muddy in the summer and a ice skating ring in the winter.  Driveways are the most neglected portion of home building.  Luckily I got mine right.  Used native material ( creek rock) as fill.  But did not immediately grade level.  I allowed sufficient time for the water to drain and then graded.  Coming off the main road I had to build up some 8-10 feet to the bridge approach. It held great.  Followed by stone and eventually bit the bullet and paved it.  The paving has proved to be one of the best investments I made.  No more mud, no replacing stone thrown off by traffic and a breeze to plow the snow.

Well it's been 21 years since and I noticed that I have some settling at my bridge approaches.  Nothing major only 2" or so on alternating sides.    No fault of mine in that I imagine the underground water from the creek has caused it.  Plan is to cut out 4' on the approaches, add stone and compact and replace those areas with concrete.

Good luck on yours.

With the weather being as it has been for the last couple days I have to remind myself that it is too early for summer. I think I will leave the snow shovel out a little longer just in case. Mother Nature can be a big tease sometimes.

Currently 76F and has been in the daytime for the last week.  I looked back and this date in 2013 we got 8" of  snow.  Go figure.   ???

We're still hoping for moisture, we got a spit of sleet/sprinkles/flurries Sat but not enough to even go inside for. We stopped harvesting cohosh in the woods short of what the herbal company wanted. We've been dividing the root and replanting a piece with a bud and roots in each hole as we dig them. The soil is now so dry they won't make it and the thousand or so we have replanted probably aren't going to make it either. We have many thousand in the woods but I don't want to mine them out. The conditions just aren't co-operating this year. This is also part of a university research project, and that is good data too, don't count on a crop every year. Doing the math, we got a great price and still minimum wage is a goal for next year, must be some form of farming. That is a minor inconvenience compared to the mountains south of here, I feel for those folks. We've been in and out of some of the smoke and have had a few smaller fires here.

Mornings in the mid 20's the past few days, we got up into the 40's today. High winds last night, probably some 50's and quite breezy today.

Usually if I can bump or snatch the log a little with the truck or tractor it'll break loose. Frozen logs are fine to saw, as are thawed. Partially frozen can be interesting, generally ok but as the blade encounters frozen and thawed wood it can start wandering around, just one to keep in the back of mind if things aren't acting right.

Here in upstate SC, it's been warm and excrutiatingly dry. We'll sail past Thanksgiving without the first frost. That's about a month late. We've been dry since about March, and have had little rain at all for the last 3 months. There are a lot of big forest fires going on, and some days the smoke is awful. I'm thinking about investing in cactus futures...

It has been quite a snowy winter this year, surprising quantities have fallen.
Last night another 1-foot of the stuff fell, and another 6 inches coming in the next couple days.
Surprisingly the city (at least at my city home) has been doing a pretty good job with the clean-up... and even more surprising is that the schools are all still open for business.  What ever happened to snow days?

My biggest worry in my country place.  I haven't been there in a couple of weeks, been so busy just haven't had the time.  There must be at least 2' of standing snow, with probably 3 layers of 1-2" ice within.  I have a 3-4' overhang on each end, just worried they can't support the weight.  I refused a couple of guys 2 weeks ago when they showed up out of the blue shoveling roofs... was worried if they were inexperienced and damaged anything I wouldn't know until the snow melted or I got a leak in the roof... they'd already be long gone by then.  Now I am having some doubts...  maybe I should have done it...  decisions, decisions.  My driveway is about 120' long and on a pretty intense slope (mountain side).  Delivery trucks can't back up the driveway because their bumpers hit before the truck can pivot.  Once up the steep slope, I've got probably 20-22 steps to get up to the house.  Once there its nice, but all that shoveling just to get in the front door is enough to make you want to close it down for the winter.  :)

I wonder if there are any bylaws against building a "tempo" over the stairs (snow shelter).  That would at least save some back pain.

I'm glad to not have to shovel snow very often.  That said, we got 2.5 inches overnight. Hoever, it is warm enough it has not stuck on the driveway.

Same here Don.  Mildest winter that I have seen in years.  But I will take it.   ;)   Can't believe it is Mid Feb already without a considerable snowfall like winters past. Hope I am not speaking too soon. ;D

It is crazy how different regions have such drastically different weather, some with much more snow and others with almost none compared to "normal".  Right now if my Jeep is parked in the street in front of the house I can't see it, the snow banks must be 6-8' high.  You almost have that tunnel effect driving down the street.  I wanted to take a picture of my shed but forgot.  Its one of those small metal sheds (reinforced internally with a 2"x3" skeleton), and its currently sitting with at least 3' of snow on top of it... so a 6' tall shed stands 9' tall... pretty crazy.

Anxious to see how the land is doing in upper NY state...  last year the brook ran dry from lack of snowfall, I should have a waterfall this year!

We've been quite warm, I was welding in a T shirt yesterday when I realized I was getting a tan. This is the mildest winter I can recall.
It's trebuchet's this time around for the school intersession break. The kids will build tabletop models then we'll go for a walk through the woods and discover a big one in a field at the state forest. I got a pair of rocks on the big boy and test fired it for the first time a minute ago, about 500 lbs of swinging rocks and steel, the frame seems to be strong enough.

Crazy how things change.  Was almost no snow left, warm weather was here... felt like spring.
We're in the thick of a big snow storm right now.  16 inches of snow with 60 MPH winds...  roads are insane, schools already automated calling us to say they'll be closed tomorrow.  May be the last hoopla before the flowers start blooming again... as someone else said, hopefully that means my brook will be flowing nicely this spring.

Most of the time I don't really realize I live on an island until it rains non-stop for weeks at a time and we start to flood.  I personally am above the flood zone so far, but there are many who are now under water.  Friend of mine has been waiting for it to go down and can now no longer leave his house.  They called in the army to help out but they came a bit too late by the sounds of it.

We just got an email from the school board, all schools are closed until further notice.  Some are flooded, some are being affected because the bus companies are under water, some because people are stranded on different islands.  Scary how fast a city can come to a screeching halt by mother nature.

Nothing like some of the flooding we've seen on the news down south, but still hits home.

Be safe.
Help your neighbor if you can.

Snow...In May, in San Diego County, 30 miles north of Mexico.  Anyone still in angst over global warming is welcome to come see it.  Bring your snow shovel.

Cold and getting colder. Really glad we put so much insulation in our walls. We had 1 fire this morning at 7am, and as of 1130 the house is too warm for another.

It looks windier than 15-30mph, but I'm not going outside to find out. Humidity is running a little high so I turned the bathroom fan on, I have one spot downstairs I can still move the insulation to take moisture readings of the sheathing, which is still in the safe 'no mold' zone.

The weather is so wonky this year.
Last Friday was +8C (~46F) and raining, Saturday it snowed 45 cm (~18") in less than 24 hours, and today it was -34C (-29F).
This kind of temperature swing with massive snow falls is becoming the norm in these parts... strange.

Well, here it is Feb. 9 and for all intents we have zero snow so far this year. Our "water year" runs Oct thru the next Sept. In the past 125 years, since records started being kept, this is the driest start to our water year. Tomorrow we will be driving to our cabin. We should have to snow shoe.

On the one hand it is nice being able to drive all the way up at this time of year. On the other hand if this keeps up the drought will stress the trees even more, beetles will add to the kill toll and wildfires will turn the rest to ash.

It's not even all that cold; 33F last night and 55 F today at the cabin according to the remote weather station.

Last year they (US Gov) had changed some policies that used to govern the water levels in the great lakes, rules that had been standing for over a century.  As a result we have massive flooding and many homes were either damaged or complete losses with many families still living in hotels waiting for insurance companies and government to catch up with repairs and payouts (since last spring).  In the fall, the levels were still very high, and with all this snow fall there is sure to be even more flooding this spring.  We live on an island (Montreal) so there is no escaping.   They've had to change all the 100 year flood lines and now anyone living where it used to be considered relatively "safe" are now stuck with their homes not being able to insure, and/or not being able to get permits to rebuild or to change any footprints.  My buddy bought in a "safe" area, and his builder had some forethought and build his place on a hill (build up the lot before building the house).  It looked bit wonky, but after last spring his house had no damage other that the land, driveway all but disappeared, and his shed was completely destroyed along with everything inside of it.  They will not issue any permits to rebuild his shed, fence, deck, driveway...

Even small changes can have massive impacts.  A bit less snow can mean everything burns down in the summer.  A bit too much snow, everything floods and washed away.

I hadn't heard about this, so I looked up the stories about it.

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/quebec-ontario-floods-water-management-politics/article37511432/

QuoteTo counteract local self-interest, Canada and the United States created the International Joint Commission (IJC) in 1909, an independent agency to regulate shared water bodies and settle disputes, along with the board that manages Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence.

The board consists mainly of scientists from the Canadian government and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, along with other appointees. Year round, they meet weekly to decide how much water to let through the dam.

Looking at the data, it doesn't sound like it was soley due to the changes from that, nor was it JUST the US gov't. :D  Record amounts and near record amounts of precipitation this Spring didn't help. And from my reading, if they let the water out of the dam TOO fast, they flood MORE down the St. Lawrence river! Doesn't sound like this was really preventable from what I can tell. ALL of the Great lakes have risen. Lake Michigan and Huron was above the 1918-on historical average as of 2015. (2 years before the new plan went into effect.) We've had a much wetter last couple years here in Wisconsin, dumping more water into Michigan than normal.

Just saying I think there's more than just the US Gov't policies affecting this. Mother Nature really has the power.  c*

Yup, you're totally right.  More habit than anything, figure our news and conversations are biased so it becomes natural to blame the Americans...  :)
It just seemed to happen at the same time, and our news were warning of impending doom based on the US decision to blaa blaa blaa... and then sure enough we got hit.  Trump bashing is rampant even here in Canada, we hear more about him than our own princess, oops, I mean prime minister.  At least your chief is not a wuss....

We just got plummeted by 16" of snow, that's gotta put some stress on the roof rafters.
Gotta come up with a better design for roofs...  maybe heated...  not just those ice dam wires but the entire surface.

We had a nice April till the last week, and then the first 2-3 weeks of May which were cold and rainy.

Similar weather to you, Adam, though a bit warmer. We are in the 70s now, and have been for about a week.

Looks like a rough start for farmers this year.

We're just coming off of a brutal heat wave here in the southeast. High temperatures as much as 20 degrees F. above normal. We haven't had measurable rain in nearly a month, which coupled with the heat has left things DRY. The last two nights have been down around 60 F. Supposed to be rain by Wednesday- I hope!

(hi for my first post here btw)

winter sure has been a bit weird in and near ottawa [the capital of canada] as far as janurary-feburary span goes, one very warm spell and a few separate instances of it literally raining a lot! I mean who has heard of a few inches of rain when there is a lot of snow still on the ground?! ughhh

nevertheless its been basically between -10c and +5c temperatures during the day with little/no windchill most of the time lately tho
