toilets/sink space saver

I've noticed that the bathrooms seem to take a lot of space in many designs. Has anyone tried this type of toilet?  It would save sink space.

A spigot on top of the tank of this western style flush toilet allows users to conserve water by washing their hands in water destined for the next flush. Note that it is not a drinking fountain. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toilets_in_Japan

This is a great idea. I wonder if an American fixture makers are doing this. It wouldn't suffice for a real replacement sink for things like shaving as it must only have cold water. It could make for a pretty compact WC under the stair or such.

When I was a little kid (lo those many years ago) my greatgrandmother, then in her 80s who had lived in a home with an outhouse and a hand water pump would always lift the lid on the tank and wash her hands in the tank water. I of course thought that was so strange and not really understanding toilets thought all the water was dirty. She of course was just conserving something that took work to get.
