Vertical jigggllling!!
« on: November 12, 2010, 01:15:51 PM »
I am using Microsoft 7 Pro on a HP laptop.  When I reply to a post, and get "wordy" ... a few paragraphs ... the line being typed on scrolls down out of sight, and then jigglings up and down.  "Thumb-wheeling" does not correct the problem.

Any ideas? ??

I have experienced the same phenomenon when I have a lengthy post . . .    I normally use a word processor to structure the post, then use the copy and paste before saving.

It would be interesting to know “why” it “jiggles”.

I am using Internet Explorer 8.

When it happens to me I am able to make it stop by placing the cursor on a blank area of the display, pressing the mouse wheel once to activate the scroll page on mouse movement up or down page)  or whatever MS calls it and then pressing it a second time to deactivate it.
Just because something has been done and has not failed, doesn’t mean it is good design.

If you didn't have the time or money to do it right in the first place, when will you get the time and money to fix it?

It bugs the heck out of me and it seems to have gotten worse of late.
I decided just to post in shorter sections.

I am not able to duplicate the problem.

I will try it on my Windows 7 laptop. The XP desktop I am typing on now is fine with the text in the input window.

Does the whole window jiggle, the bottom line or the whole block of text?

John:

On a lengthy reply, the entire text will move upwards on each keystroke . . .    You are then upable to see the text that is being typed.   So, I either “blind” type and then preview.   Or, use a word processor, and then copy and paste.

OK, I tried it on my Windows 7 laptop and the text builds until I reach the bottom of the text box (the text box is full). The cursor jumps to the next line pushing up the previous text and starting a new line. This continues as I type and does not jiggle or hide lines.

I can continue to move the block higher by typing returns or just flowing text into the text box with auto returns.

I wonder if this happens on certain browsers, or with certain video cards? I am using the latest version of Firefox and the built-in card on my Dell Studio laptop.

Here's what I posted at the SMF support forum:

Some of my forum members are complaining that when the are doing a long post and as they get to the bottom of the text box the new lines do not push up the previous text, but "jiggle" and hide the next line that they are typing.

I cannot duplicate this problem and wonder if it is a browser or video card issue? Both my XP and Windows 7 machines work fine with Firefox.

Here's the response:

It's an IE issue!

Your members can try viewing your site in compatibility mode, but there is no "fix"

Is anyone having this trouble with browsers other than Internet Explorer?

I have had the problem at widely spaced intervals, no regularity at all. I do not use IE. The scroll wheel solution I outlined above always resolves the issue for me, so it is possible it is a user inflicted problem (dumb messy keystrokes on my part).

To anyone who is having this problem has anything changed on your system. Anything, including MS or other updates (one reason I do not permit MS to do updates automatically) or installation of new software, removal of old software, etc.
