Sheathing

Should sheathing be attached vert or horz....what is the prefered way....why?

There are new home  being built near us...they're installing the sheathing v and h....I know sheer wall goes up v....

  Jee here's another depends answer , sorry :-[ .    I like to go horz.  , I think it's a better way .   But most shear walls require solid blocking at the / any joints.  So to reduce labor I will sometimes Soldier  ( apply vertically )the sheets/ sheathing . Less blocking = less labor .

  I will sometimes get 9' or 10' OSB so I can span from top plate to sill plate . Again if I can avoid Hinge points I will do it for that very reason .  

   So again it depends on what your doing / trying to achieve and a lot depends on design / size etc .
