You snooze... you lose, Ben.. :)

I better try the small stuff first - those tractors are mostly basket cases but look cool.

RIjake, at that  point I was setting it at it's final resting place at the back side of the trailer.  The remote does make it easy to let the truck do the work and just guide it into place.  [ouch]

This was a new seed source to me, lots of varieties

they have lots of varieties of summer squash too -- I am looking for a Zucchini replacement variety for "Black Beauty" which has done poorly for 2 years in a row,  lots of blooms but most rot before picking size  [noidea'

prices are good too at rare seeds

we order most of our heirloom seeds from seed savers -- most of the seed packets are $2.75

They have potatoes too

these two sources are very complimentary -- lots of different varieties at each site

http://www.seedsavers.org/

We are going to try these things for seed starting this year from Johnny's Selected Seeds -- they were highly recomended by a friend

Rot before picking size = dose good with epsom salts in water around plant.  I and other friends had the same problem.  Deficiency of magnesium - like blossom end rot.

Another fair priced one I think.  Just found it.  http://www.vintageveggies.com/information/storing.html

Baker looked a bit better though   http://rareseeds.com/   Didn't compare extensively.

I have ordered from Seed Savers and checked prices at Johnnies but Bakers was about 1/2 price in a lot of cases.

I had the same problem year before last and research as well as a local gardener brought up the same answer.  Calcuim could help too I think.  Both can be short in the case of blossom end rot.

Finished planting about 600 plus or minus - onions in the garden yesterday.  I made a new terrace for them by some trees I think died last year from various abuses.  This was an especially good area of the old tree terrace -

The good horse manure I got a couple weeks ago has been cooking away a was close to ready to go to work so I used it, and got some of it out of Sassy's view.  :)

I also worked over the old hugelkultur bed adding a new top layer of horse manure.  The ground here is very dry having only had a couple good 5 " rains this year and not often enough to get the clay soil soaked deep.  Something tells me this is a great year to spend extra effort on the garden.  Food prices are going through the roof as well as prices on a lot of other things.

So.. if I grow extra I will share with friends in need which can include almost anybody with our great economy.  [waiting]

Going to a vegetable nursery the other day, we saw a nice big Bobcat.  Sorry  for the pix quality.  He was on the move and this was the best shot I got.

Sassy got the flowers planted by the rock wall I built the other day.  Made things look a lot better there.  She wanted a fence to keep the kids from wandering through the flowers and jumping off of the wall when they visit so I took a couple of Oak logs I saved a couple years ago and put them up on rebars driven into the rocks and clay.  I drilled holes in the Oak breaking two Rigid wood bits - the kind with the screw sticking out the end center.  Finally went to a steel bit and got 'er done.

I put 3 rebars under each log and set them into holes drilled 1/2 way through the logs from the bottom.  To understand why I did it this way you need to know a bit about trying to dig holes in our rock and clay soil. :)

The rock wall is made from the rocks that came out of the soil here.  [frus]

The new terrace looks  [cool] with the tractor there.  I have a 1 horse mowing machine that I will display similar whenever I find the time to do it.

Just heard from Larry Kidd.  He is getting up a bit in the technology world and we may hear a bit from him soon.  Hoping to hear more of his big adventure.  Best to Larry and family.

OK.. Just had a massive revelation... [waiting]

I just planted a row of beets about 50 feet long yesterday.  As soon as they pop out of the ground the birds will want to eat them. [frus]

I was going to go buy a roll of clear plastic to cut and cover it with until they had a chance.  Plastic prices have gone through the roof though. [noidea'

I next thought , OK - maybe some painters drop cloths cut as they are super thin but should still frustrate the birds attempts to eat my seedlings.... standing eating breakfast from the microwave, I then had the bright idea to use Costco food wrap plastic.  Relatively cheap compared to the thick stuff, clear and width is right for a single or double row.  [idea]

I'll give it a try and keep you posted.  :)

Just because something has been done and has not failed, doesn't mean it is good design.

??? on whether you want to cover the plants to keep the birds out or whether you want something to keep the weeds out.  If you cover the plants with plastic or cloth they will get burnt or scorched if the material is not kept off of the leaves.  If it is bird protection get netting.  They use here around the blueberry farms to keep the birds from pecking into their profits.

glenn kangiser

I guess that could be a point.  I don't know if the thin clear stuff would scorch them or not.  I just know that the second day the leaves pop out the birds peck the tops off of them and eat them. [frus]

I wonder how the netting would work?  I only want to do single rows at a time.  I assume when they go to eat my plants they would get their little peckers stuck in the net.  [ouch]

I was afraid I would have to build a structure over the garden to stop the birds with the netting so I thought I would try the plastic first and see if it works.  I just weighted it down with small rocks available everywhere in my garden.. [ouch]

It may help keep the seed bed damp too.  No moisture in the soil and the wind just dries out what we irrigate with in a short time.  The clay transfers the moisture right to the top until there is little left.  The manure and wood chips improves the soil a lot.

Chicken wire and rebar....Make a cage that runs the lenght, rebar is to tie the chicken wire to  c*

A good idea I think TT but I am trying to keep from building structures around my garden.

How would the deer be able to get in there and eat it just before it is ready to harvest... [waiting]

Actually I am a bit bad with stuff like that and likely I would let the grass and bushes grow up through it then end up trying to untangle it from my rotoriller tines later.... [ouch]

Getting ready to move in a load of unnatural resources that Whitlock is bringing from my other yard cleanup.  [ouch]

Unfortunately I broke a fork off of the forklift and have a flat on my Bobcat.  What fun.... [waiting]

A friend from Tasmania sent me a document regarding fire evacuation policies in Australia.  Seems they have come to their senses.  He recommended I share it with agencies here.

I set up a link to do that and will also share it here for anyone interested.

I fixed the flat on the Bobcat about 4 times now - got a tube for it Saturday and Whitlock helped me put it in.  Ran for about 10 minutes and 5 minutes of that was on the flat tire after it slipped on the rim again and tore up the inner tube.  [frus]

I put a call in to Bobcat but they are so slow now that the calls just go to the one man running the Merced office on his cell phone, and he hasn't called back yet.  I found them online - hopefully the right ones so he better not be too wild on his prices.  [waiting]
