Framing Nail Gun?

We are thinking about purchasing a framing nail gun and was looking at the Campbell Hausfeld round head framer at LOWES for $199. This price also includes a finish gun and a brad gun
I have looked on the net for reviews but not had any luck.
Would anyone have some knowledge to share?

We did not find any information about the CH nail guns so DH decided to purchase the PASLODE FRAMER.
He is  like a kid with  a new toy   ... wants to nail down everything in sight!

Our only regret is that we didn't buy one at the beginning of the build.

Have fun and be careful - I have had two men with nails shot into their hand, and another one shot me in the back.  Keep that extra hand well out of the way and make sure no one is in front of you in case of a miss or a bounce.

The framing nailer scares me more than the table saw I used to remove my left thumb!

If it's that hazardous, I expect I'm best doing without.

(I've still got a knot on my head where the drill bit stopped and the drill didn't the other day.)

I've shot a lot of nails with no major damage to myself, but even being careful there is a bit of a danger factor.  Nails can hit a knot and richochet, split a board, glance off a board but still trigger and fire - that's how I got shot when my helper was toe nailing a board in a floor - , but with care they can really raise production.

I'm with you, Amanda.  Glenn got me a set of Ryobi 18v rechargeable tools - circular saw, drill, sawzall type saw, vacuum, light & canvas bag with 2 batteries & a charger - all for $129!   I guess I can do enough damage to myself without using the nail gun.  Now, at least, I will have my own tools handy (I have to hide things so I have tools when I need them  :-/ )

I have a CH framing gun that I framed my cabin with. No problems for me. I paid $99.00 for it at  a local discount tool store. I think it jambed twice but was pretty easy to clean out.

I have a Porter Cable that also jambs once in a while - not a real problem though.

We have/had a CH brad nailer,it came with the compressor, it jammed up to much so we just dumped it. We have a Porter Cable 350 framer that I bought online from the PC rebuilt site for $125, it has been great, the only time we have had any problems is when I forget to oil it, it lets me know. I like the round heads on the nails and the fact that it holds 2 1/4" to 3 1/2" nails.

Thanks to all of you that responded to my original post.

After some thought this weekend the DH has found another reason to use his new toy......  

We had never framed  the pantry walls in my kitchen so off he goes with the nail gun.

Lately our time has been limited in being able to work on the house so after getting the gun we were surprised at how much we got accomplished in the time that we had to work.

Framing nailers are scary beasts.  Take your time, make sure your off hand is out of the way, and do not try to nail like the guys on TV.  The big advantage for us part-timers is arm savings.  I have way over-swung my hammer doing framing before I got the gun, once I literally could not lift my arm for 2 days after spending one day doing nothing but swinging my hammer.

That same CH set is at Costco in California, maybe other places too.  Was only 159.  If you have one near you, you might check it out and see if they have it.  If you don't like it, or it breaks, you can return it!

The Bostitich framing nailer has a rig for shooting TICO nails.  Best time saver, evah!

You'll be happier than a pig in mud with a Pasload. I got a cordless Pasload Impluse framing nailer and it the best tool purchase I that I have ever made. The thing just flat out takes a beating and keeps putting out nails. Good Luck

Looks like some do - some don't -

The common ones take 21 degree nails  - the 34 degree is less common.  Also make sure you get the one that shoots full round head nails.  The clipped ones are not approved by code in some places.

A lot of you talk about the discount houses for getting good prices on nail guns.  I've done it myself.  But I have also had good luck on getting more expensive brands at pawn shops.  It can be a gamble but everytime I have bought at a pawn shop I have been able to try it out and I haven't been burned yet.  Right now I have three Bostich coil guns, framer, sider and roofer.  Pawn shops can also be a good source for all kinds of other tools.

I love my air nail guns; Bostitch framer and Senco finish nailers and stapler. They make big jobs go faster and save the old arm joints. I treat mine with the same respect given my other guns; Colt 45, Winchester 94, etc. and never shot anyone with either.
