Hello,
I was actually trying to find other Ontario, Canada stairbuilders when I happened across the posting by KeithINOnt about his plight with the spiral stairs in 2004.  It is sad to see that so many people can't find creative & resoucefull stairbuilders.  There is no reason why he could not have gotten his spiral stair, unless the stair was narrower then 55", the ceiling was min. height, and absolute economy of cost was an issue.  We have done numerous wooden spiral stairs since 1971, all within the OBC regulations.  All of our design/manufacturing leaders are artists as well as carpenters, and maybe that is why we have no problem making many stairs, that other builders would walk away from.  If someone says no, we always ask why not.  There has not been one B.Official that we have not been able to accommodate, and if we have ever disagreed with them, and thought that they were wrong or inexperienced in this field, we have taken them to the Commission and won.  In the end it comes down to knowledge, per-severance, time and money.  Please don't give up your dreams too easily.

Well said and true.

It is often the owner-builder or less experienced builder who gets ground down by the wheels of government. The experienced and perpared specialist will know when you can push and how to present a viable option.

All the more reason to get a little help from your friends and not expect you will have to have all the answers to all the questions yourself.
None of us are as smart as all of us.
